Edentulie Totali 1

The loss of all teeth meant, until a few years ago, the need of a total prosthesis (denture) which brought about the well known consequences: scarce stability of the prosthesis, specially in the jaw, reduced chewing strength, and food taste altered, sometimes vomit and phonetic problems. The pressure of the prosthetic base on the bone may, moreover, increase the atrophy of the latter, with consequent further deterioration of the prosthesis's stability. The collapse of the facial tissues (lips, cheeks) causes an "old person" look on the people carrying insufficient total prosthesys. With dental implants it is to-day possible to break this vicious circle. As few as 2-4 implants with spherical connections may be sufficient to give, as in the case shown below, a satisfactory stability.

4 implants inserted 8 years before in the toothless jaw of a 67 years old patient (photo left). Despite the precarious oral hygiene the implants still have kept intact their stabilizing function (photo of 5-2-2003).

The 4 implants a few years later, still working well despite the evident carelessness of the patient. The photo at left shows the old prosthesis inserted.
